Gorenje could be the choice for you…

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Are you looking for that popular retro design, but without the price tag? Well, have you thought about a Gorenje? I’m placing bets on ‘probably not’. Gorenje’s hugely popular Retro refrigeration collection received a Get Connected Product of the Year Award 2011 – these awards recognise products that are deemed ‘the best of the best’. So, go on, why have you not considered one?

Gorenje is a Slovenian brand (surprise number one). It was established in the early 1950s (surprise number two), and was called Gorenje after the small southern town it started in. Steadily, through the 50s and 60s the brand grew and expanded the product range to include washing machines and cookers and became the leading manufacturer of household appliances in Yugoslavia. Since then the product range and variety has grown, and so has the brand, with sales and distribution networks across Europe, Australia, Asia and the USA (surprise number three).

The Retro Refrigeration line is described by Gorenje as, “Classy, stylish, and understated”. That obviously doesn’t apply to the vivid orange, green and pink models! These are described with words such as “adrenaline, freedom, rebellion”. Wow! The whole retro range comes with a five year manufacturers warranty and all are A+ or A++ energy rated, helping you do your bit for the environment. The freestanding units are available in three styles; a fridge with an internal icebox, a fridge freezer with a smaller capacity freezer to the top and a fridge freezer with a freezer to the bottom and there is a great selection of colours, with the cream models are available with a left-hand hinge opening.

Other features of the Retro range include;

  • LED display –  to accurately control the temperature of your fridge
  • Innovative fan system – to keep everything cool and air flowing round
  • Glass shelves – easy to clean,
  • Anti-bacterial protection – to ensure your food is kept fresh for as long as possible

You have probably read that last bullet point and thought “What? How?” Well, the interior panels and doors of Gorenje refrigerators are coated with a special material containing an inorganic silver compound. This compound has antibacterial properties (surprise number four), and the protective coating of this prevents harmful micro organisms from multiplying, even if you have spoilt food in the fridge. This means your fresh food will still be fresh days after you buy it. This clever protection keeps working for the entire life of the appliance. Excellent or what?!

The Gorenje Retro range is available now from Go-Electrical, with special offers on the cream models. Prices start from £637.90 so why not purchase a piece of popular retro style now?

Heard of Cuisinart yet?

Monday, May 16th, 2011

If you have read this blog before, you may be aware that I easily fall in love with different brands and products. Well, this blog is dedicated to Cuisinart simply because I love their products! So fickle, I know.

The Cuisinart brand specialises in small kitchen appliances, and they are massive in the USA with over 30 years of market prominence. In fact it is not unusual for a food processor to be called a “cuisinart” whether it is one or not! Cuisinart was founded by American Carl Sontheimer while he was living in France in the 1970s. In 1973 the first Cuisinart food processor was launched on the American market, and the brand was backed by famous food experts James Beard and Julia Child.

In 2003 Cuisinart was launched on the UK market, and although the brand is not yet as well known as Magimix, it is definitely making people think twice about which brand to use in their kitchens. Personally, I have the Cuisinart Espresso Maker on my wish list, and a Burr grinder to match. My mum on the other hand is pining for the award winning Soup Maker (Housewares Product of the Year 2010). Here at Go-Electrical we have a wide range of Cuisinart products from Multi Temperature Kettles to Griddles, Ice cream Makers to Pan Sets.

The Cuisinart Espresso Maker is fantastic for making great-tasting espresso, cappuccino, latte or any other coffee… Great if you are a coffee freak like me! With it you can make high quality coffee inside your own home, without the large costs of paying for it at a shop. It has a large 2 litre removable water tank, so you can make plenty of hot beverages without being interrupted. With 15 bar pump pressure system the espresso maker creates the perfect crema and flavour and the best bit is that it smells absolutely amazing! Anyone selling their house?

This machine is programmable so it can be pre-set with the desired cup strength and size, which means your daily wake up is just how you like it, every time. The stainless steel frothing arm that is built into the machine can create rich, creamy hot frothed milk in a matter of seconds, and it also comes with a hot water function so that you can also make tea.

Cuisinart products have great guarantee periods – the Espresso Maker has a 3 year guarantee, while the Burr Grinder has 5 years. The large food processors (which are fabulous by the way) have a massive 20 year guarantee on the motor! That is much more than other food processors (8 years more than Magimix!), and proves how confident Cuisinart are in the standard of their product.

As summer is upon us (well, we were hoping that it was but the sun seems to have gone) Cuisinart has some great products to make your summer a whole let better, whether it rains or not. With the Griddle & Grill you can get that BBQ feel indoors if you need to. This great appliance is award winning and is designed with healthy eating in mind. The grill plates allow the user to cook food while draining any excess fat off. The grill plates are also interchangeable which means you can switch between the griddling and grilling. The product can be a panini press so the kids won’t get bored of the same boring sandwiches during the summer holidays. The great thing about this appliance though is the way you can use it in different positions – you can adjust the machine to either be used as a grill press or lay it out to get double grill/griddle plates, fantastic! This means that if you really want to deep fill your paninis or put one or two thick beef steaks on the grill, then by using the adjustable floating hinge it gives you a bigger gap for you to grill with. Brilliant!

How about making some ice cream for the kids? And some tasty, fruity smoothies (or cocktails for the grow ups)? Well, grab yourself one of the fabulous Cuisinart ice-cream makers or their brilliant blender. The Elite Power Blender gives you total control over the taste and texture of your creations as the unique 6 edge blades ensure that all food is properly blended, and with the glass jug having a large 1.75 litre capacity you can serve all your guests without any fuss. The brilliantly heavy-duty blades combined with the powerful motor crushes ice in seconds which means you can serve your margaritas frozen or on the rocks, mmmmm yummy!

Here’s one of my favourite summer non-alcoholic cocktails, it is so refreshing when sunbathing. To get a BBQ party started just add some vodka or white rum.

55ml fresh lime juice

1 cucumber, peeled and seeded, cut into 2cm pieces

800g seedless watermelon, cut into 2.5cm pieces

15g fresh mint leaves

Place all the ingredients in to the blender in the order listed.

Cover and blitz

Add some ice, and blitz again

Turn the power off,  serve in tall glasses with straws and umbrellas and enjoy the sunshine!

Visit the Go-Electrical Cuisinart page to view all the great products that are available at great prices. From pans to kettles, and soup makers to rice cookers there is no doubt in my mind that you will find something that you would like to have in your kitchen. Cuisinart are well made and reliable, and I’m told that once you have used one of their products you will want them all!

Are you ready for jam season?

“Successfully preserving the nations fruit and veg”

Our Cookshop, here at Go-Electrical, just keeps getting bigger, and the next big name we are going to be stocking is Kilner. Great news for anyone who is handy with the jam sugar – especially with jam season not far off.

The original Kilner jar, was first invented by John Kilner and Co in the 1840’s. He founded the John Kilner & Co glass company in 1842 that produced this jar, and the products have been popular ever since. Although enjoying commercial success, rival glass manufacturers were quick to create alternatives and unfortunately the Kilner family business went bankrupt in 1937.

Thankfully, Rayware now manufacture Kilner jars, so we can keep on preserving! They have updated the design but have maintained the unique vacuum feature helping households everywhere to preserve and pickle fruit and vegetables. The original Kilner jar had a rubber-seal and a screw-top lid, but some of the modern Kilner jars have clip-top lids which are far easier to open (when the time comes to enjoy your preserve of course).

Elderflower and Rhubarb Jam – A combination of the best two early summer flavours.

6 large elderflower heads
1.5 kg rhubarb
1.5 kg sugar
1 lemon

Tie the elderflowers in a muslin bag and put in the bottom of a large mixing bowl. Cut up the rhubarb, put on top and sprinkle with the sugar.

Cover with foil or a plate and leave for 12 hours.

Stir well with a wooden spoon, cover again and then leave for another 12 hours.

Empty the bowl into a saucepan and heat slowly until the remaining sugar has dissolved. Do not allow to boil.
Return to the bowl, cover and leave for 12 hours.

Remove the muslin bag and add the juice of the lemon.
Bring slowly to a boil the boil rapidly until setting point is reached.

Pot in sterilised jars while still hot.

Get picking that fruit!
