The big switch over

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

TV is going digital. The existing analogue TV signal will be switched off and replaced with a new, stronger digital TV signal. It will mean that almost everyone will be able to receive digital TV through an aerial. You may have already been through this changeover, but some areas are still awaiting the arrival of Digital TV.

Yorkshire TV region – Switchover starts from: 3 August 2011

Meridian TV region – Switchover starts from: 8 Feb 2012

London TV region – Switchover starts from: 4 April 2012

UTV region – Switchover starts in: 2012

Tyne Tees TV region – Switchover starts in: 2012

Digital TV uses less broadcast space than analogue which means that there is more space for new services such as wireless broadband, local TV and High Definition Television. To keep your TV service, you will need to convert your TVs to digital before your area’s switchover date and by doing this you will receive not only your existing channels, but many more too.

Switching is easy, and can be done by just connecting a digital box to your existing TV. Remember though, that if you have more than one television you will have to consider all of them, and any TV equipment you may also have. This means that if you like to record TV programmes, and watch them later, you will need ensure that you get a digital TV recorder like a Sky+ or Freeview+ box.

Go-Electrical has a number of set-top boxes available so you can get Digital ready. The Humax Foxsat HDR (£143.40) provides a perfect (and cheaper) alternative to SKY+HD. It has an easy to navigate user interface and wide range of channels both of standard and high definition.  The HDMI port allows you to view High Definition channels in all their glory on a HD Ready TV.

A great recorder is the Sharp PVR TUTV322H (£163.90). With this great box, you can record up to 160 hours of tv, and it also has Top-up-TV compatibility which expands your viewing options. It combines Freeview+, a twin tuner and software that allows you to record two programmes simultaneously, and watch a pre-recorded one all at the same time! The box is simple and ‘one touch recording’ is the main feature – it is so easy to set it so that the whole series of your favourite show can be recorded.

If you have any questions about the Digital Switchover you can email us on or you can visit the Digital Switchover website – which is brimming with advice and information.

Feast your senses with Britannia

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Have you always dreamt of having a super-duper range cooker that you can cook anything and everything on? Do you need a jaw-dropping centre piece to a new kitchen, and something that will make all your friends green with envy? Have you considered a Britannia Range Cooker?

If not, why not?

Britannia was established in 1985, and was one of the first companies in the UK to introduce range cookers. Since their birth the company has seen steady growth, (probably because their range cookers are so sort-after), and the company even has its own ‘Home Economist’ who is on hand to provide help and inspiration for Britannia owners!

There is a range cooker from Britannia to suit everyone; classic or contemporary, electric or dual fuel, and they range in size from 90cm – 150cm. No matter on the spec, all Britannia appliances are built with quality and longevity in mind. Just wait until you hear one of the robust oven doors close – satisfyingly reassuring.

Britannia range cookers are available in five different ‘families’ – Sigma, Dynasty, Classic, ‘L’ Line and ‘E’ Line. See which one will be best for your kitchen…

The Sigma range offers contemporary stylings, and would take centre stage in any modern home. It comes in Cream, Black or Stainless Steel, has triple glazed doors and has been A rated for efficiency. All Sigma ranges have grills in all ovens, but the Sigma is also available in an XG model which has a separate dedicated grill compartment.

The Dynasty range has solid doors and chunky controls, giving the range a robust and professional feel. Also available in Cream, Black and Stainless Steel the Dynasty range cookers would fit in with a traditional or modern kitchen. Like the Sigma range, the Dynasty range is available in an XG model with a separate grill.

Classic means classic, and the classic range of cookers boasts an elegant trim and would fit a traditional country style kitchen. The oven comes with an electronic timer and useful storage drawer, triple glazing, and like the Sigma and Dynasty ranges both ovens are A rated for efficiency, and it is available in XG.

The ‘L’ Line cookers are incredibly popular, and are available in Stainless Steel or sleek Graphite. The ‘E’ Line is available in stainless Steel and glossy Black and has double glazed doors. Both lines are a perfect choice for a busy family kitchen, and will definitely make the any kitchen the hub of the home.

“Cooking involves all your senses, so everything designed by Britannia is intended to delight them. See the difference a Britannia range cooker will make to your kitchen. Feel the unmistakable quality of the construction with the robust oven doors. We’ve engineered in quietness, so that you’ll hear the sizzling of steaks. Smell the tempting aroma of a Mediterranean flavoured chicken cooked to succulent perfection. They say you can’t buy good taste, but we beg to differ.”

Cleanliness is next to Godliness

Monday, June 20th, 2011

In the mid 1800s in Michigan, America, a wife complained to her husband about sawdust and dirt getting embedded in their carpets, and that sweeping alone was not enough to get rid of the dirt. The husband went on to design, and construct a carpet-sweeper to make his wife’s life easier. This machine went on to be a massive success, and people were soon asking where they could get one for their own homes. The husband and wife were Melville and Anna Bissell, and the Bissell Carpet Sweeper was patented in 1876.

Now, ladies, I know you are probably thinking that your husband wouldn’t invent something for you, but that was not the point I wanted to make! Since then, Bissell has grown, and it isn’t just carpet sweepers – there are steam cleaners, combined vacuum and steam machines and lightweight cleaners.

Bissell has added some new products to their already extensive range, and has called it the ‘Healthy Home’ range. Several of these new products have been given The British Allergy Foundation’s ‘Seal of Approval’, because the deep cleaning achieved is such that dust and mites are eliminated. The deep cleaning technology that these Bissell machines use combines vacuum suction, brushing action, hot water and cleaning solution to clean beyond the surface of your carpet and upholstery.

The new ‘Healthy Home’ products are;

  • Healthy Home ProHeat 2x upright
  • Healthy Home Fresh Clean upright
  • Healthy Home Simple Clean upright
  • Healthy Home Spot Clean
  • Healthy Home Vacuum
  • Healthy Home Pet Clean

Depending on your needs, Bissell are bound to have the perfect machine for you whether it is the ‘Healthy Home’ range or not. Take a few minutes to browse the range – and keep your home spotlessly clean.

Always improving the site…

Friday, June 17th, 2011

When our new and improved website launched at Christmas we received some very positive feedback but many customers wanted to be able to browse the site by brand. After some technical fiddling (stuff I don’t understand!) the Go-Electrical website now has a browse by brand capability –

Here you can scroll right through from A-Z and see all the brands that we have available to purchase. At the moment when you click on  Dualit you get taken to all the products by Dualit, but eventually most brands will have a landing page with information about the brand and selected products – maybe even some pretty pictures or offers! Which means if there happens to be a Magimix, Polti or Smeg offer available that will be the place to look for it. So keep your eyes peeled!

Need some wedding gift ideas?

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

As wedding season looms, you may, like me, be wondering what on earth to buy for the loved-up couple in question. It is likely that they have been living together for a while so may have most things that newly-weds would need. So, where does that leave us?

Let me present classic yet contemporary cookware by Hahn; perfect pots and pans to give as wedding gifts.

Hahn pans are recognised by the super gloss mirror shine finish and their durability. These stainless steel pans are suitable for use on all heat sources, including induction hobs and are dishwasher safe. The construction of these Hahn products means that the bases are bonded extremely securely (the three ply base is attached under 1000 tonnes of pressure – that ain’t shifting!) and the designers have remembered to include steam vents in the lids to prevent rattling when the contents come to the boil.

If you don’t think that stainless steel is right for the special couple in question, Hahn also has a range of enamel ware. This range comprises of casserole dishes in 8 different sizes and they are available in three different colours – Liquorice, Cardamon and Mascarpone. Equally beautiful in a traditional kitchen or a modern one. These enameled casserole dishes are a lightweight alternative to cast iron and are oven safe to 240 degrees.

Hahn cookware is environmentally friendly – 100% recyclable and non-toxic and the products are energy efficient due to the high heat retention. Now that’s a bonus for everyone in this economic climate! Want to know what the best bit is? Hahn cookware comes with a 25 year guarantee.

View Hahn cookware at the Go-Electrical cookshop, and also browse the range of  kitchen storage solutions that Hahn added to their range in 2010. There are pan stands and wall and ceiling racks available in different colours and styles.

Sleek, Modern, Stylish…

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

The Conran Audio iPod dock is beautiful mixture of stylish, modern design and stunning audio technology, thanks to a brilliant partnership between Armout Home and design guru Sir Terence Conran and his team.

The iPod dock’s audio engineering comes from Q Acoustics, and the dock is a dedicated “100% pure iPod player” but also features Bluetooth connectivity so devices can be used wirelessly (such as an iPad). Don’t panic if you want to connect other music sources, such as radios, CD and MP3 players – these can be connected through the audio output sockets via the Conran Audio iPod dock’s 3.5mm auxiliary input.

The dock assembly rotates so that your iPod and iPhone can be mounted vertically or horizontally. This means that you can view menus as you wish, and easily control what you are listening to. Another great feature is that you will always be able to find the remote because when it is not in use, the sleek remote fits snugly into the side of the dock. The Conran Audio iPod dock boasts six preset audio equalisation settings to optimise its performance for different types of music in different rooms.

Furthermore, the Conran dock’s in-built Bluetooth™ receiver chip is compatible with ‘apt-X’, the new high-performance audio coding technology which transmits CD-quality full-bandwidth stereo over Bluetooth™ connections. ‘apt-X’ is the ‘must have’ technology feature in high-end consumer audio devices, and the Conran Audio iPod dock is definitely one of those!
